Switch from Fastmail

Switching from Fastmail? Keep your address. Keep your mail in Australia.

Fastmail is a good service and an Australian company, but your mail is stored in the US or the Netherlands. Sora Mail keeps it in Sydney, costs A$6 a mailbox including GST, and watches your domain's health for you.

How the move works

Three steps, and you can do the move yourself

Fastmail is one of the services you can move from on your own today, or we'll do it with you.

1

Start your free trial

Sign up in a couple of minutes, no card. Add your domain and we give you the exact settings for it.

2

Bring your mail across

Create an app password in Fastmail and import your old mail yourself, or let us do it for you. Contacts come across too.

3

Point your domain and carry on

Change your domain's mail settings (we check them for you), add the account to your phone and computer, and carry on as normal.

Before you decide

What stays the same, and what changes

What stays the same

  • Your email address. Same domain, same addresses.
  • Your apps. iPhone and Mac Mail, Outlook, the Gmail app on Android, Thunderbird or the web.
  • Calendar and contacts. They sync on iPhone, Mac and Android, using the same open standards Fastmail uses.
  • Billing in Australian dollars, GST included. Same as you're used to.
  • Your old mail. Import it yourself or we move it for you.

What changes

  • Where your mail lives. In Sydney, on Amazon's Australian region, instead of the US or the Netherlands.
  • Your bill. A$60 a year per mailbox instead of A$90 on Fastmail Standard, with the same 50 GB for mail.
  • Someone watches your domain. We re-check your domain's sender settings every 6 hours and the spam blocklists every day, and tell you if anything slips.
  • File storage. Fastmail includes some file storage; Sora Mail is email, calendar and contacts only.
The technical bit, in plain words

What changes at your domain

Your domain stays exactly where it is. Only a few of its settings change, and we check every one of them.

MX
Where your mail is deliveredYour domain's MX record tells the rest of the internet where to deliver your email. When you're ready, it gets pointed at Sora Mail instead of Fastmail. That one change is the actual switch.
✓
Proof that your mail is really from youThree short text records, called SPF, DKIM and DMARC, tell Gmail, Outlook and everyone else that mail from your domain is genuine. We give you the exact values, check them before you switch, and then re-check them every 6 hours for as long as you're with us.
?
Where you make the changesAt whoever manages your domain's DNS, usually the company you pay for the domain name. If you're not sure who that is, tell us the domain and we'll work it out. If you'd rather not touch it at all, we can talk you through it.
⏱
How long it takesMost changes take effect within an hour or so, though some can take longer to spread. Keep your Fastmail account open for a few days after the switch so anything that lands there in the meantime isn't missed.
