Can employers use CCTV to monitor staff in Australia?

Many Australian shops already run cameras for security and insurance. Using those cameras to watch how work happens is a different conversation — legally and culturally. This page is high-level owner orientation, not legal advice.

Owner hygiene (ops + respect)

• Tell people cameras exist and the main purposes (security, incidents, cash area).
• Don’t put cameras in toilets / change areas — obvious, still worth saying.
• Use footage for specific questions (incident, till exception, open/close) more than continuous performance scoring.
• Store and access responsibly — who can log in matters as much as where the lens points.
• Align with Fair Work–aware process if footage informs a warning or termination.

Practical shop framing

Phone access for exceptions: view CCTV on phone. Absentee ownership: run a shop without being there. Hardware choices: security cameras for cafe · retail store. Prefer “floor insight for coaching the shift” over “spy on staff” language — both inside the business and in how you talk about tools publicly.
